644. GEORGE LEWIS STOLTZ, born 23 May 1846 at Stoltz Prairie, Lick Prairie Precinct, Wabash County, Illinois, was the son of George Johann Stoltz and Margaret Hinkle. See page 505. George grew up on his father's farm. He attended one of the local rural schools, probably Buzard Roost, one-half mile south and 1 1/2 miles east of his home. He also attended the Jordan Creek Lutheran Church about 2 1/4 miles north of his home. His parents were members of this church. Young George Stoltz was sometimes called George Jr. He loved farming and carpentry. He was also a school teacher. George was one of the early teachers of Stoltz School. His father helped establish and then donated the land for this school. County records show that George taught Stoltz School for two school years: 1886-1887 and 1887-1888. A school year at that time was comprised of three terms--fall, winter, and spring, with a total of six months. The story of Stoltz School, a list of teachers, and an early picture of a school class is given on page 509. Family tradition reveals that Eva Weyl, whom he married at age eighteen, was one of George's pupils. Therefore, George would have also taught Stoltz School in 1873-1874 or 1874-1875, or both years.
George Stoltz married Eva Weyl 9 March 1876 in Wabash County, Illinois. Eva Weyl was born 15 May 1858 about two miles northwest of Stoltz School in Wabash County, Illinois. Her father was Henry Whyle (note spelling), born in Germany, and Elizabeth 11 it. Henry Whyle married his first wife in Germany and had three children: (1) Robert Weyl, (2) Charles Weyl, and (3) "____" Weyl. Henry and his family came to America in the 1840's. They settled northwest of Stoltz School. It is uncertain if Henry changed the spelling of his name from Whyle to Weyl or if he accepted the U. S. census taker's spelling. Henry's first wife died young and he married second Elizabeth 11 it and had five children from this marriage: (4) William, (5) Louisa, (6) Lizzie (Strine), (7) Frances, and (8) *Eva (Stoltz).
George and Eva Stoltz after their marriage moved to his father's land about one-fourth mile south of Stoltz School. On the 9th of May 1881 he bought 40 acres of this land from his father and mother for $700; recorded and located as follows: S.W. 1/4 of S.W. 1/4 of Section 21, Township 1 North, Range 13 West of Second Principal Meridian, Lick Prairie Precinct, Wabash County, Illinois. In 1885 he purchased the S.E. 1/4 of N. E. 1/4 (40 acres) of Section 16, Township 1 North, Range 13 West of Second Principal Meridian, Lancaster Precinct, Wabash County, Illinois, from his father and mother for $250. George built on the 40 acres south of his father's homestead, but never built on the 40 acres in Section 16. George and Eva were faithful members of the Jordan Creek Lutheran Church located about two miles southwest of Lancaster, Illinois. Eva Stoltz met an untimely death 11 June 1895. Her youngest daughter, Emma, was only fifteen months old. Burial is at Old Brick Cemetery, Jordan Creek Lutheran Church. Eva Stoltz, the oldest daughter, who was ten years old, helped her father raise-the family except for baby Emma who was taken by Margaret Kolhouse, her father's sister who lived near. Emma continued to live with her Aunt Margaret.
George Stoltz died 29 January 1905 from cirrhosis of the liver. Burial is by his wife Eva at Old Brick Cemetery. George's two young daughters, Clara and Hazel, were placed under the guardianship of Jacob Stoltz, George's younger brother.

He did not favor the farm as had his father and grandfather and great-grandfather. He chose railroading as a career. He was an employee of the Big Four line which ran through Mt. Carmel, Illinois. His run was from Danville, Illinois, to the north and Harrisburg, Illinois, to the south.
George Stoltz married Myrtle Rachel Wilson 4 March 1901 at Fairfield, Illinois. Myrtle was born 4 July 1880 near Fairfield, Illinois. Her parents were Franklin D. Wilson and Mary Head. George and Myrtle Stoltz made Mt. Carmel, Illinois, their home for several years. On 2 October 1901, seven months after his marriage, George purchased property in Mt. Carmel from Robert Parkinson for $800. George and Myrtle lived at Mt. Carmel until 1905. During that time he was fireman on the Big Four Railroad. On one trip, the train hit a flock of sheep and was wrecked. George was severely burned by hot water and never went back to the Big Four line. In 1905 at the death of his father, he moved back on the farm and farmed until 1910. When the estate was settled and the farm sold, George went to work for the Illinois Central Railroad where he worked until retirement.
George Stoltz died 4 July 1947 and Myrtle died 15 August 1954; burial at Oakland Cemetery, Freeport, Illinois. George was a good Christian man. He was a big man, over six feet tall with very large hands and feet--a Stoltz characteristic. George and Myrtle Stoltz had four children.
